Arthur became a Senior Advisor of Douglass Winthrop Advisors LLC in 2008. He was a Managing Director of the firm from 2004 to 2008. From 1994 to 2004, Arthur was an officer and shareholder of Hovey, Youngman Associates, Inc. From 1983 to 1994 he was a Vice President at Citicorp Global Asset Management. For eleven years prior thereto he managed a publicly-held holding company with interests in transportation directories and databases, commercial real estate and securities. Previously, he was an officer and director of Neville, Rodie & Shaw, Inc., investment counsel.

Arthur is a trustee and finance committee member of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, a director and audit committee chairman of the American Council on Germany, Secretary and a Director of The American Agora Foundation, sponsor of the history journal Lapham’s Quarterly, a Trustee of The Walbridge Fund, Ltd., and a trustee of Vineyard Open Land Foundation. He is a past class secretary in the Harvard Business School Owner/President Management Program.

Arthur received his BA from Princeton University in 1958.
